چکیده

Our previously reported survey of the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) environment using Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) detected over 70 unique Resident Space Objects (RSOs) multiple passes, from 20 h observations in passive radar mode. In this paper, we extend work by demonstrating two methods that improve detection sensitivity system. The first method, called shift-stacking, increases statistical significance faint RSO signals through spatially coherent integration reflected signal along RSO’s trajectory across sky. This method was tested on used during our previous blind survey, and obtained a 75% increase total number detections. second re-focuses MWA to near-field position (post-observation), applying complex phase correction each visibility account for curved wave-front. successfully an extended array observation ISS pass. However, is currently limited de-coherence long-baselines (due hardware constraints current correlator). We discuss improvement detections expect Phase 3 correlator upgrade. conclude paper briefly commenting future dedicated Domain Awareness (SDA) systems will incorporate technologies.

The Murchison Widefield Array Correlator

The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) is a Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Precursor. The telescope is located at the Murchison Radio–astronomy Observatory (MRO) in Western Australia (WA). The MWA consists of 4096 dipoles arranged into 128 dual polarisation aperture arrays forming a connected element interferometer that cross-correlates signals from all 256 inputs. A hybrid approach to the correlati...

Remote Sensing of the Heliosphere with the Murchison Widefield Array

The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) is one of the new technology low frequency radio interferometers currently under construction at an extremely radio quiet location in Western Australia. The MWA design brings to bear the recent availability of powerful high-speed computational and digital signal processing capabilities on the problem of low frequency high-fidelity imaging with a rapid cadence...

On the detection and tracking of space debris using the murchison widefield array I. Simulations and test observations demonstrate feasibility

The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) is a new low-frequency interferometric radio telescope, operating in the benign radio frequency environment of remote Western Australia. The MWA is the low-frequency precursor to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and is the first of three SKA precursors to be operational, supporting a varied science mission ranging from the attempted detection of the Epoch of ...

The giant lobes of Centaurus A observed at 118 MHz with the Murchison Widefield Array

We present new wide-field observations of Centaurus A (Cen A) and the surrounding region at 118 MHz with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) 32-tile prototype, with which we investigate the spectral-index distribution of Cen A’s giant radio lobes. We compare our images to 1.4 GHz maps of Cen A and compute spectral indices using temperature-temperature plots and spectral tomography. We find that...

A GPU based real-time software correlation system for the Murchison Widefield Array prototype

Modern graphics processing units (GPUs) are inexpensive commodity hardware that offer Tflop/s theoretical computing capacity. GPUs are well suited to many compute-intensive tasks including digital signal processing. We describe the implementation and performance of a GPU-based digital correlator for radio astronomy. The correlator is implemented using the NVIDIA CUDA development environment. We...
